CIRCALGAE
- ECO-CONCEPTION
- MATOMO
Wokine worked with Aquimer to create an eco-designed site for CIRCALGAE. This European sustainable biorefinery project aims to transform the mass-produced algae biomass into high added-value products for the animal feed, food and cosmetics industries. The objectives of the CIRCALGAE site were therefore multiple: to promote the project and its added value in Europe, to highlight the actions put in place, to raise consumer awareness of the need to recycle this waste in order to accept the new products, and to act as a link between the various communication tools.
The challenge was therefore to meet all these objectives at first. It was also decided from the outset that the site would be in English only, as this European project is aimed at a large number of countries. To take this issue of the planet’s well-being a step further, we suggested to our client that they create an eco-designed site that would have as little impact on the environment as possible.
An eco-designed site for this European project
The eco-designed vision for the site was implemented right from the mock-up phase, with a streamlined design, solid white surfaces and a limited number of visuals. The use of a system font (Arial) saves on performance and resources. As it is already present on all existing computers, there is no need to load another one.
In terms of integration and technical development, we’ve avoided page transitions to make the site lighter. As a result, the information appears more quickly, which limits the energy consumed.
We have also chosen to limit the number of animations used to increase the eco-responsibility score. We used colours and pictograms to highlight the information. The weight of the photos has been optimised, as has the tagging. This makes it easier to rank information in order of importance, which in turn makes it more accessible.
Internet users are informed that the site is eco-designed thanks to a badge at the bottom of their screen: This website is eco-designed and uses fewer resources than a conventional site.
Matomo, an ethical alternative to Google Analytics
Matomo is an open source web analytics solution that tracks and analyses website traffic data. We chose to use Matomo because it respects user privacy by anonymising IP addresses and offering the option of disabling user tracking. Matomo allows us to obtain accurate and reliable data about our users, while respecting their privacy, and offering an open source solution that we can customise to suit our needs.
A site designed also for our customer, and the evolution of his project
The project may evolve depending on the partners and the initiatives taken by each stakeholder. So we’ve designed a responsive site that’s fully manageable, giving our customer full control over the editing of text and images. Of course, we support them on a daily basis with their requests and queries.
Some key insights about the website eco-design and eco-conception.
This site, from the mock-ups through to the technical development, was produced using an eco-design approach and has now been awarded an A eco-index. This approach has optimised loading times, reduced carbon impact and improved accessibility for web users.
